THE EXCISE

Speculative notes on time, position, and the costume of rigor —
a philosophy of stumbling, retrospectively assembled.

First Edition  ·  Anno Domini MMXXVI

This is a working imprint for a discipline that does not yet exist. It studies the moment after — when meaning is being assembled from what occurred rather than predicted from what will. It treats luck and noticing as primary materials, not embarrassments to be smoothed over. It treats the costume of rigor not as a deception but as a condition of access: the borrowed authority that makes serious thinking permissible in the first place.

Most things worth saying require permission to be said. The editorial position of this imprint is that permission can be self-issued, provided the work is honest about how it got there. The Greek letters are real. The accidents are also real. Both belong on the page.

of Time.
Every position is evaluated against multiple clocks simultaneously. A setup correct on one clock and wrong on another is not a good trade with bad timing — it is a misaligned object, and the misalignment is the actual subject.

Glossary of the Order

Excise
Not the tax, not the strike. The price at which time becomes the underlying.
Fork
Any moment where two viable readings of a single object diverge into actionable difference.
Convergence
The negative space of attention. What fails to happen, but happens loudly.
Clock
A reference frame that produces its own unit of meaning, irreducible to the others.
Flat Triangle
An object satisfying its definition by collapsing what the definition was trying to capture. The mark of the order.
Stumble
An arrival at insight that cannot be retraced. Counted as data.
The Costume
The register required to be heard. Worn deliberately. Removed when no longer load-bearing.
Retrofit
The act of building the framework after the move is already made. Considered honest work.
Suchness
The uncarved state before naming. From 樸 (pǔ). What the meme carves into story.
Republic
Any venue of accidents. The room one is in before the cameras arrive.
Knowledge Gating
The base assumption: information moves before price, and one is not upstream of it.
The Slap
The moment the body remembers what the mind tried to forget. The act of saving a file.

The work is to name the clock you are on, the costume you are wearing, and the stumble you are still inside. After that, the words are easy.

§ III

The Five Clocks

A position is not a single bet. It is a bet evaluated against five reference frames, each with its own unit of meaning. The clocks may be loaded together, individually, or against one another — long on one, short on the next — to produce a portfolio that is not a list of holdings but a matrix of times.

I
The Path

Measures whether the thing is becoming itself or its opposite. The clock of forks, separations, and the moments that decide which story gets told.

resolution · intraday → multi-session
II
The Drift

Measures how long an idea takes to be absorbed. The clock of institutional digestion, of news that has happened but has not yet finished happening.

resolution · weeks → quarter
III
The Excise

Measures the fiscal calendar of the soul. The boundary year. The hard edge after which a thing is taxed differently — by the state, and by the self.

resolution · 364-day boundary
IV
The Sentiment

Measures when consensus crystallizes around what was already true. The clock of memes, of names, of the uncarved block being carved in real time.

resolution · minutes → days
V
The Continuous

Measures the venues that never close, where time itself trades. The clock of always-on markets, prediction venues, and other places without bells.

resolution · without interval

There is no book. There is only the assembly of clocks.

Speculative Departments

Format · Single Sheet

Broadsides

One concept, one page. Declarations on flat triangles, knowledge gating, the costume, the stumble. Print-ready, suitable for posting on actual walls.

Format · Marginalia

Glosses

Marginal notes on canonical texts. Bernard & Thomas annotated by lived experience. Almgren-Chriss in conversation with the Daodejing.

Format · Live Note

Field Reports

Real-time observations of meme formation. The pizza box becoming a glyph. The exact moment a story crystallizes around a number.

Format · Retrospective

Retrofits

Post-hoc theoretical framings of moves that already worked. The Raxy 2023 basket as case study. The Republic accident as method.

Format · Long-Form

Lectures

Extended treatments. Lectures I–IV established the chassis. Lecture V on Fork Dynamics is open. Lecture VI is a rumor.

Format · Cyclical

The Excise Calendar

An annual cycle marking the 364-day boundary as a fiscal-philosophical anniversary. The year measured in holding periods rather than seasons.

Format · Cross-Model

Adversarial Reviews

Pieces stress-tested across model voices. Claude, Gemini, the others. The pieces that survive contact with disagreement become canon.

Format · Working Note

Interludes

The papers between papers. Where the thinking is still wet. Where the framework is being made rather than recited.

Format · Visual

Seals & Marks

Small graphic objects for completed concepts. The flat triangle. The five-clock dial. The uncarved block. Stamped, not signed.

Editorial Position · The Final Word

What this imprint takes for granted.

That retrospective coherence is honest work. That costumes are tools. That flat triangles count. That a stumble well-noticed is worth more than a prediction well-made. That the body remembers what the mind tries to forget, and that saving a file is one way the body remembers.

That the noticing is real even when the framework is play. That the framework is real even when the position was an accident. That speaking in borrowed registers is not deception, provided the borrowing is acknowledged. That the answer to "can someone take me seriously without me having to costume up first?" is yes — but the costume, once unnecessary, can be enjoyed for its own sake.

That nothing here is financial advice. That everything here is philosophical. That the line between the two is exactly the subject under study.
